LTE to San Diego Union by Danny Richter - Global warming ignorance
Regarding “Heating
up the global warming discussion “(July 21):
“Water vapor,”
“climate change liars” and “nothing we can do but adapt”? Seriously? The deluge
of willful ignorance in the climate-denier letters published on July 21
reflects poorly on the Union-Tribune. While the newspaper was publishing this tripe, the Los Angeles
Times had an excellent piece stating the obvious: After a 15-year
span including 10 of the hottest years ever recorded and the hottest June ever,
climate change is real and our fault.
We’ve known that
carbon dioxide traps heat since John Tyndall stuck some in a tube with a thermometer 151 years
ago, shone some light through it and observed it was warmer than without extra
CO2. Burning coal, oil and gas that we have to remove mountains and drill
literally miles beneath the surface to get at is not releasing carbon that was
in the atmosphere any time recently.
The “whodunit and
how” of climate change is not complicated: Humans, with the fossil fuels, in
the library. When one side of an argument is clearly wrong, journalists have an
obligation to expose frauds for what they are.
